Time On Your Side

A Week of Time – Monday

I’m diggin’ these weekly themes. I had intended to write one post on the topic of time, but I realized it has way too many interesting angles to cover in a day. Hence, A Week of Time.

It’s almost November. Every conversation we have or overhear includes, “Where has the time gone?” The fall breeze carries the faint smell of panic.

In You Are A Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness, and Start Living an Awesome Life, Jen Sincero writes about our relationship with time. I have been giving this concept a lot of thought lately.

Time does not control us, we interact with time. We have a relationship with it. Your thoughts about time, how you treat time, and how you value time, directly affect how time affects your life. Never have enough time? Examine and nurture your relationship. Just like our interpersonal relationships, it’s all about us. Angry at someone? It’s about you. Can’t seem to get along with someone? It’s about you. It’s always about us. The best thing about time is it’s straight-forward, like a pet. It’s always there for you. If you treat it well, it will treat you well.

Today’s inspiration: Time loves me

How to use it: Doesn’t the idea that time loves you make you smile? It’s easy to think of time as an unfeeling, unstoppable force, but it’s so much more fun and effective to think of it as an ally. If you knew, deep down in your bones, that time loved you, was on your side, always there for you, how would it change your thoughts? How would it change your day? Your life? Today, if you feel rushed or overwhelmed, repeat to yourself, “Time is my friend. Time is on my side.”

Example: (me, today) I wake up and think, “It’s Monday. Root chakra. Foundation. Mental clarity. Yoga. Financial tasks. Home tasks. Office tasks.…wah wah wah.” My heart races. I try to meditate and my mind is a whirling dervish. I hear a little voice asking me what I’m so wound up about. I yell, “I don’t have enough time!” That loud voice in my head startles me and reminds me I’m yelling at my friend, time. I have been working on my thoughts about time, and still I forget.

Ah, my friend, time. There you are. I pretend I am having tea with time. We are chatting. Time asks me how it’s going and I say I don’t feel like I can get it all done. Time reassures me it’s always there for what is important to me. I take a deep breath and trust my friend time. My mind clears and I can meditate. And everything starts to go smoothly. Somehow I have completed all my morning tasks and it’s only 8 a.m.

Time is a badass and can do anything it wants. So can you! Time will be there for you if you nurture your friendship with it.

Be inspired. Go forth. Create your day.
