“If you love somebody
Set them free
You can’t control an independent heart
Can’t tear the one you love apart” -Sting
You can apply these words to a relationship, or to yourself. Set yourself free. Trust your independent heart. When you are able apply this concept to yourself, it becomes easier to apply it to others.
Attraction requires surrender. You cannot force yourself to manifest something that is not in alignment with your true self. You cannot make someone love you. You cannot make someone hire you. You cannot stop someone else’s self-destructive behavior.
What can you do? Love yourself as you are, then turn inside and Do The Work, as Byron Katie, and many others, would say. For me, “the work” means, DISCOVER YOURSELF. The work comes in many forms, and every bit counts. When you raise your vibration, you raise the vibration of everyone you love. See post: Steps.
How do the Law of Attraction (You attract into your life whatever you focus on) and Surrender & Trust work together? They sound like opposites. It makes me think of the surfing lesson in the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall. “Do less. Do more…” (Watch the clip if you feel like laughing.)
Our progress seems to go like this: We think we know what we want…to have power, to have a certain person love us, to be irresistible…and we do all these crazy things to make it happen, and it doesn’t. But, as soon as we let go and accept that it’s not meant to be, we are presented with our true desire. Think…Aladdin, Pride and Prejudice, Love Potion No 9, Memoirs of a Geisha.
I like Wayne Dyer’s interpretation of the Law of Attraction: “You don’t attract what you want. You attract what you are.”
Though it can be overwhelming or depressing to think unwanted situations exist in our lives because of who we are, if we remove the judgment, it’s a great place to start. You are a not bad person if you have what you consider “bad” things in your life. You have intentionally (subconsciously) brought those things into your life in order to work on yourself. They aren’t bad or good, they are reflections of yourself. If something makes you feel bad, it is pointing you toward something your inner self wants to work on.Go inside. Figure out what you want to explore.
These ideas and “laws” have been around forever. Karma, another word for the same idea, dates back to the first millennium BCE.
Side note: When I read that fact, I did a little research because that date has no significance for me except that it was way, way before The Secret was published. Want to know how many years ago the first millennium was? According to Google: “The 1st century was the century AD 1 to AD 100 according to the Julian calendar. It is often written as the 1st century AD or 1st century CE to distinguish it from the 1st century BC (or BCE) which preceded it. The 1st century is considered part of the Classical era, epoch, or historical period.”
This answer left me thinking, “A sphincter says what?” My fellow Wayne’s World fans know what I’m talking about. (I think this clip alone makes this post worthy!)

My point is, these ideas have persisted through our existence because they are true. It’s easy to read something and think, “Yeah, yeah. I know. Not a new concept,” but when people present these ideas in a new way, they give us another opportunity to connect. If something doesn’t resonate with you, don’t dismiss the idea entirely, keep looking and find a version that does resonate.
