An Itch

Last night I woke up and felt a little itch on my stomach. I moved my hand and scratched it. There was this delicious moment when the itch was gone, and the satisfaction of a perfect scratch still lingered. If I could, I would bottle that feeling and send it to everyone.

This happy little moment got me thinking about itches. Some itches disappear with one little scratch. Some itches feel like they will never go away, no matter what you do.

Today’s inspiration: The Itchy Approach

Itch (definition): an uncomfortable sensation on the skin that causes a desire to scratch

  1. When we have an itch, we usually scratch.
  2. If the scratch alleviates the itch, we don’t think again about the itch.
  3. If the itch persists, we might scratch more.
  4. If this works, we don’t think again about the itch.
  5. If the itch comes back, we scratch again.
  6. If it persists, we repeat #3.
  7. If it persists, we might think about doing something more than scratching, such as lotion or a cool compress.
  8. If it persists, we might do something to take our mind off the itch, such as go for a run.
  9. If it persists, and we are mindfully inclined, we might focus on the sensation in an attempt to lesson our discomfort.
  10. If it persists, we might try to figure out what is causing the itch. Allergy? Sensitivity? Affliction?

We are definitely in an itchy moment.

Things to consider:

  • Is your itch persisting?
  • If so, are you looking for the cause?

You might think, “Duh. The cause is all this upheaval and uncertainty due to COVID-19.”

Of course. Perhaps.

Really feel the itch. Where is it located?

  • Your heart?
  • Stomach?
  • Head?

What feelings are beneath it?

  • Fear?
  • Uncertainty?
  • Anger?
  • Frustration?
  • Helplessness?

If you just keep scratching and scratching, you are going to end up scabby and infected.

We are united in this pandemic, but it affects each of us differently.

Louise Hay (You Can Heal Your Life) says an energy underlies every physical ailment. Energy surrounding an itch: Desires that go against the grain. Unsatisfied. Remorse. Itching to get out or get away.

To clear the energy, replace it with a different energy. She suggests this mantra for an itch: I am at peace just where I am. I accept my good, knowing all my needs and desires will be fulfilled.

Each time you feel that itch (panic, fear, hopelessness, anger), repeat her mantra.

Write it on a piece of paper if you can.

Say it until you feel a little better.

Once your itch is not all-consuming, try to lean into it and let it teach you. Your body is trying to tell you something. Listen and allow.

Your thoughts create your reality.

In the infinity of life where I am,

All is perfect, whole, and complete.

The past has no power over me

Because I am willing to learn and to change.

I see the past as necessary to bring me to where I am today.

I am willing to begin where I am right now

To clean the rooms of my mental house.

I know it does not matter where I start,

So I now begin with the smallest and easiest rooms,

And in that way I will see results quickly.

I am thrilled to me in the middle of this adventure,

For I know I will never go through

This particular experience again.

I am willing to set myself free.
