Shark Week

IT’S SHARK WEEK…

I mean, CHAKRA WEEK!

The official pronunciation of chakra is with a hard -ch, but I learned it with an -sh sound. I like this video which explains the pronunciation options. Basically, it doesn’t matter.)

Chakras are the seven major energy centers of your body. You could spend your life learning about the chakras—a worthy pursuit—but, for this week, I’m going to focus on how to use the chakras to tether your day. I’ll give you an overview and then talk about one each day this week.

Overview of the chakras

There are seven chakras, and they start at the base of your spine and work their way up to the top of your head. Each chakra is energetically aligned to a specific day of the week, and also associated to a color.

Monday – Root Chakra – Red – Base of spine

Tuesday – Sacral Chakra – Orange – Below your belly button, above  your hip bones

Wednesday – Solar Plexis Chakra – Yellow – Above your belly button, below your chest

Thursday – Heart Chakra – Green or Rose – Chest, arms, and hands

Friday – Throat Chakra – Sky blue – Throat

Saturday – Third Eye Chakra – Indigo (between blue and violet) – Center of your forehead

Sunday – Crown Chakra – Violet – Top of your head

I like to focus on the chakras because it gives me a magic feeling—like there’s a well of untapped force inside and around me. (See post: A Little Magic) When all of the advice from wise people—stay positive, focus, don’t give up—feels true, but trite and uninspiring, I turn to chakra work. And it’s not work, it’s fun.

MONDAY

Today’s inspiration: Root Chakra

  • Location: Base of the spine
  • Color: Red
  • Affirmation: I am safe

How to use it: The root chakra is located at the base of your spine. It is associated with the color red, and is the center of your sense of safety and stability. Today, wear something red. Or eat something red. Or pick up a red pen and draw a picture or write a note. Focus on completing something that will make you feel more secure.

Example: You wake up, unsure where to start—so many things to do this week! You remember it’s Root Chakra Monday, so you wear red. You find a shirt with a red tag (it’s the best you can do). As you eat an apple (red), or a cherry, or cereal from a box that has red on it, you think about the challenges that face you. What are you worried about? Perhaps you haven’t made a phone call, or paid a bill, or finished a project. Pick one thing and make it your priority for the day.

Now repeat: “I am safe. I am safe. I am safe.” Throughout the day, if you find yourself thinking something negative, repeat again, “I am safe.” Even if you don’t feel safe, or you don’t believe it, the Universe still hears you and adjusts your reality to make it so.

You: “I am safe.”

Universe: “I will rearrange things to help you be safe.”

You: “I am safe.”

Universe: “I’ve got your back.”

You: “I am safe.”

Universe: “You are safe.”

Be inspired. Go forth. Create your day.
