Joy of Missing Out

We have officially entered the holiday season—parties, presents, food, end-of-the-year goals. It’s easy to feel like everyone is having more fun and doing it better than you are.

If you want to breeze through this season feeling merry and bright, try switching from FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) to JOMO (Joy of Missing Out). At our book club the other day, my friend talked about JOMO, and I thought it was brilliant.

There is tremendous joy to be found in taking care of yourself and saying no when something does not align with you. So before you say yes, and give into your fear of missing out, or for any other reason, think about the joy of missing out, the joy of doing what you need or want to do.

Ask yourself…

What do I do every year out of habit that I wish I didn’t have to do?

Now ask yourself…

What do I really want?

Think about how you might find joy in missing out on things you always do as part of your holiday routine, but that don’t bring you joy. Make sure that what you’re doing is bringing you joy in some way. And if it’s not, drop it. Period.

Every time you choose JOMO, take the time to focus on something you really want. Even if that something is just a little peace and quiet.

Be inspired. Go forth. Create your day.
