Perfection

Some say, “There’s no such thing as perfection. Stop trying to be perfect.”

I say, “You are already perfect. Right now. Exactly as you are.”

Some people worry that if they believe they are perfect just as they are, they will be stuck and never want to improve or grow. I am here to tell you that is absolutely FALSE.

Do you know why you’re perfect? Because you ARE. Meaning, the essence of you—the part that doesn’t depend on what you think, what you look like, who you know, what you do—is perfect. Infinite miracles had to occur for us to experience this reality. You are proof of the miracles. Just one little hitch, this way or that, and you wouldn’t be here.

I know some would say they would have skewed it to make their presence obsolete. I get it. This miraculous state of being isn’t easy. Nonetheless, you have chosen it and it has chosen you, and whether you like it or not, agree with me or not, you are perfect.

I was listening to The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John C. Maxwell. (Highly recommend!) He talks about the Law of Addition which says that a good leader always adds value to other people’s lives. While I agree with this statement, I have an issue with the semantics. A person’s life is infinitely valuable.  I don’t believe anyone can add value to another person’s life. I would revise this law to say that a good leader reveals or helps others see the value they already intrinsically posess.

I like the podcast Primal Potential, hosted by @ElizabethBenton. She says her mission is not to inform you, but to transform you. The way she transforms you is by helping you find your power.  As I was listening to her, I wondered, “What is my mission?” Here’s what I concluded:

My mission is to help you reveal yourself. Just be you. You’re already perfect just as you are. Just being alive, and all the miracles that had to happen for that to be real, is valid and important. Believe this! Not with a caveat, “Yeah, yeah, that’s true, but if I could do this or that, I’d be so much better.” Faith in your perfection is the foundation for changing the world!

The inspiration: No change necessary

How to use it: If you find yourself listing all the things you need to do, or should have already done, stop and remind yourself how much you have already done. It’s a miracle you are here—you must have done something right. In our essence there is no better or worse—we are all perfect.

Example: You are running late. You just spilled your coffee on your clothes, then dropped the mug and scattered its contents and pieces all over the floor. First thought: “I am such an idiot.” Second thought: “The Universe has it out for me.” Now, take a deep breath (see post) and look around. Picture the scene with a young child instead of you. The child skips to the door with her new backpack, anticipating the first day of preschool. All of a sudden, she trips over a toy, falls to the floor, and starts sobbing. Your heart breaks for her. She was innocently heading out for her day and look how sad she is. That’s exactly what you were doing—innocently heading out for your day. Maybe you were rushing. Maybe you were distracted. Does that mean you weren’t trying to get where you wanted to be? Comfort yourself and get back on track. If you skip the condemnation, you will find the lesson much more quickly. You didn’t spill your coffee because there’s something wrong with you, or because forces are out to get you. You probably spilled because you were rushing. There is nothing wrong with you. Maybe you just need to slow down. Or maybe not. Listen to your perfect self and you will hear the answer.

Be inspired. Go forth. Create your day.
