Fun Friday
Today I am attending a Celebration of Life for my good friend’s mom who passed away in August. Is it appropriate to have fun?
For me, having fun is synonymous with feeling joy. When I feel joy, I have fun. If the celebration were for my life, I certainly would want people to have fun. At the same time, it’s important to respect how others may be feeling. Having fun is an internal state—it doesn’t mean you need to dance around or laugh. You don’t need to show others you are having fun, or try to make them feel the same way.
It’s possible to feel joy in difficult times. Joy doesn’t need a smile in order to exist, although it does feels better with one. Joy can share its space with other emotions – sadness, shame or anger. –The Difference between Joy and Happiness (compassion.com)
Everything has the potential to be fun when you feel joy. Having fun seems frivolous to some people, but I think it’s a case of semantics. That’s probably why I enjoy comic strips so much—they are fun, but also serious and thought-provoking.
Today I will see my good friend whose mother has passed away, and I will have fun giving her a hug. I will have fun seeing her supported by all of her friends and family. I will have fun seeing other friends. It is a Celebration of Life—we should have fun. Every. Day.
