This Too Shall Pass

Week of Time – Thursday

I originally intended to explore a different aspect of time each day this week, but I have ended up focusing on different ways to nurture a friendship with time.

Today is Thursday…Heart chakra…Gratitude

AND IT’S HALLOWEEN – DAY OF THE DEAD

Death used to make me sad, and sometimes scared. I still feel melancholy when someone I love passes away. But overall, I have embraced that death is a beautiful and important part of life.

I have always loved Halloween. I love dressing up and seeing other people in costumes. As a child, I loved knocking on people’s doors and getting candy. When my children were little I made a haunted house in our garage every year, complete with a bowl of something gooey you had to stick your hand in. Halloween is all my favorite things—messy, nonsense, out of the box fun!

I think perhaps another reason I have always loved Halloween is the acknowledgement of the presence of those who were here before us. On Halloween, ghosts are real, ancestors are celebrated, everyone is connected. This is the first year I have consciously thought about it like this.

How this relates to time…

Halloween makes me think of time passing, and how we complain it passes too quickly. But the passing of time is exactly what allows us to heal from loss. It allows us to have a relationship with the people who came before us. It allows us to savor the present and be blessed by the past.

Today’s inspiration: Gratitude for time passing

What to do:

• Remember an event that was painful or embarrassing.
• Remember how you thought you would never feel better.
• Think about how you feel now.
• Recognize how time has eased your emotion and allowed you to heal.
• Send your gratitude to time. Thank it for easing your pain.
• Trust that time is on your side—always!
